If you do not have an idea who Mickey Mouse is, then you are either living in a cave or under water for the past years of your life. This mouse is The Walt Disney Company’s icon since it was brought to life by the man himself, Walt Disney, with help from his friend and colleague Ub Iwerks.
Who would have thought that a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit will be the Disney studio’s next big thing? Mickey Mouse was an offshoot of a disagreement between Charles Mintz of Universal Studios and Walt Disney over Oswald. After promising himself to create a new character that he can truly call his own, Disney started brainstorming for a new character. Frogs, cats, dogs… All these animals were rejected. It was 1928, springtime, when the bulb lighted up. Disney remembered his old pet mouse and then the rest, as they say, is history.
There is no mouse yet who can take the crown from Mickey Mouse. Nobody could resist the mouse in red shorts with big yellow shoes and a bit of likeness to Charlie Chaplin. He is so popular that a list of his series, appearances, and movies can take up more than five pages. Even today, he is continually remembered through Mickey Mouse items like watches, pillowcases, photo frames, shirts, and more. You name it and chances are capitalists already put Mickey’s face on it.
Trivia Time
Walt Disney initially called his mouse character Mortimer Mouse. It’s a good thing his wife convinced him to change the name or else kids will have a hard time telling their parents who their favorite mouse character is.
